About Cherwell Boathouse Restaurant

You've planned an afternoon punting a la Sebastian Flyte - you've got the boater, the stripy blazer, the wind-up gramophone and the obligatory teddy bear, but whoops, forgotten the picnic. Instead of eating sweaty sandwiches, plan your punting excursion round eating at Cherwell Boathouse. Owned and run by the same family for the past 30 years, Cherwell Boathouse, as its name suggests is right on the banks of the Isis (Oxford speak for the Thames) in a truly scenic spot. The restaurant is small and intimate with a beautiful terrace but not twee. The atmosphere is buzzy and lively and there is a huge range of age groups. However, if you are truly set on a picnic, the restaurant will organise a hamper for a minimum of 15 people if you pre-order. What's cooking: Fish Terrine with a light crab mayo; fragrant Thai broth, crispy sea bream with courgette and carrot tagliatelle on a bed of noodles with a tomato and caper jus; baked breast of mallard with a cranberry compote; white chocolate and ginger torte; chocolate layered crepe cake.

Set in Oxford on the river, beautiful day, fantastic location, Staff, food wine ambience akl excellent.

Very good in every way - good food in a beautiful setting.

On a Spring day, the setting on the river is pretty idyllic. Service is excellent, and the food very good indeed.

Food is not great but service, ambience and superb wine list makes up for it.

It always amazes me that this restaurant is never as full as one would expect it to be, given the food, service and setting. And the gorgeous weather.

The Cherwell Boathouse was a pretty little place just off the Banbury Road in Oxford. It's right on the river, so I imagine that in the summer of during the day it would offer beautiful views. However, since we went in the evening in February (Valentine's Day, no less) we missed out on these.

The food was good, but by no means the best I have tasted in Oxford. Service and ambience were good. Toilets clean, etc. the best part was the price, which was only £35-ish per person for three courses (no wine)... Quite good for the 14th Feb, I thought.

Ate at Cherwell Boathouse on a Sunday afternoon. It was a set menu, £24 for 3 courses, great value considering the excellent food. The pork belly was as moist and melt-in-the-mouth soft as it should be after 36 hours roasting. Apple and raisin suet pudding with vanilla custard was a gorgeous take on a homely cake-and-custard. Good food, pretty location with river views. Service was polite but a little inattentive considering that only a few tables were occupied.

Had a fab evening meal on a saturday when it was snowing heavily, so the restaurant was not very busy. Was recommended the steak, which was execptional. I chose a wine, but was recommended another to accompany the meal. It was a good choice but i didn't realise that it was £10 more than my budget selection (£16.50), so was disappointed that this wasn't pointed out.

Staff were very attentive and it is a lovely place.

One thing that always gets me with restaurants with decent wine list (this one is fabulous) is that they rarely decant the wine. Seems an easily cured oversight although the Boathouse is by no means on it's own in this.

I would recommend this restaurant, but would advise you to check the price of recommended wines or extras.

I dined in Cherwell Boathouse last night. It's now serving the winter menue which was slightly different from what I had last time. Again, the atmosphere was fantastic, however, the flavour was slightly below my expectation. The desserts were somewhat too sweet (toffee tart and apple tart), and the lamb was a bit too well done.

Cherwell Boat house offers a modern French orientated menu. Good choice on the daily menu with some interesting innovations: Hoggett spring roll contained minced lamb. Portion size rather dissapointing for my Pigeon starter and single slice of roast lamb main course. Extra bread charged at £2.50 - so not the classic French style bottomless baguette. All the food tasted good and the steak looked to be the best choice, albeit for a supplement. Wines on the expensive side but found a good Beaune.

Splendid for lunch. Impeccable service, accommodating and pleasant ambience.

We chose Cherwell Boathouse in Oxford based on top table ratings and we were not disappointed. We had to book for 6 pm to get a table at just a few days notice, but it was good to enjoy the restaurant during a quieter time, before it became much busier! Full moon over the river on a dark night adds to the enjoyment. But the food and wine were superb, and the service when ordering was particularly helpful.

My girlfriend took me to The Cherwell Boathouse for my birthday at lunchtime on a Saturday. We were allocated a table by the window overlooking the water and when the waitress was told of my birthday she brought us two glasses of Champagne on the house. What a great start. The food was excellent: starters very fresh and the mains were innovative. We had the mushroom Wellington and Bavette of beef, both superb. We had half a bottle of Meursault and a half of Cotes du Rhone. We had the trio of puddings with a trio of desert wines followed by coffee and brandies (3 of them) - the bill came in at under £150 including service which considering what we had, I felt was good value. It was fabulous. You must go if you are looking for something slightly different to a run off the mill event. Well done!

Cherwell Boathouse - Oxford

Had a business lunch here and although it was difficult to find at first, the food and service were both great.

Went over with friends last Sunday evening. It's indeed a nice cute restaurant in a quite place, with a cozy atmosphere and SUPERB food! We all loved the lamb and the deserts! I had apple tart and it was absolutely fabulous. Highly recommended!

Back in Oxford 20 years after finishing university we wanted to find a meal suitable for the occasion. One friend couldn't remember any good restaurants in Oxford so i took up the challenge and the Cherwell Boathouse didn't disappoint. Fantastic position even on a rainy Friday evening. Attentive service, excellent locally sourced ingredients, relaxed atmosphere and great company.

Cherwell Boathouse Restaurant (Oxford): Lovely ambiance, great food, and very attentive staff. A little pricey but certainly worth every penny! Perfect for special occasions or if you want to give yourself/someone a treat. Will definitely drop by again soon.

a really lovely setting with excellent good value food and a great wine list. The pudding - sherry figs and honeycomb was one of the best I've had!!

Imagine a French bistro transplanted to the banks of the Cherwell River in Oxford and you will have the Cherwell Boathouse restaurant. The decor, food, wine and service was all better than we were anticipating in a boathouse. Highly recommended.

We booked for Saturday lunch at the Cherwell Boathouse. Were running late due to a RTA, so rung restaurant and they said they would advise kitchen. Had a nice table overlooking the river. Food was very good and staff friendly. Would go again.
