About Il Bistro Restaurant

Tucked away amongst Brighton's famous laneways on Market Street is Il Bistro, a charming restaurant set in an old fisherman's cottage only moments from the sea. Specialising in Mediterranean fare and fresh fish, Il Bistro first opened its doors back in 1975 and has been a hit with local foodies ever since. The dining room – with whitewashed walls, beamed ceilings and potted plants – is popular for business lunches and family get-togethers, and Il Bistro offers pre-theatre meals as well as a down-to-earth a la carte menu featuring classics such as Gambas a la Pil Pil – king prawns cooked in garlic, olive oil and chilli; and the Aubergine al Forno – baked layers of fresh aubergine filled with mozzarella, Parmesan and tomatoes.

Il Bistro was a cute little place tucked away in Brightons Lanes. It was a little pricey if we hadnt have used the set menu, but lovely service and food.

Food was ok but quite over priced

Il Bistro was OK but no more - perhaps a bit past its prime. The Asparagus starter was fine but unremarkable, the bream was good, the pork chop OK but with well charred crackling. The accompanying baked apple was strangely fridge cold. Given the huge choice now in Brighton, not worth seeking out.

We went for a pre-theatre dinner to Il Bistro and ordered fish which seemed fresh. My sea bass was fine, although slightly overcooked. However my wife's fillets of sole were overcooked and she wasn't so impressed. However, desserts were very good.

Friendly unsophisticated restaurant in the lanes. Good food and service with owner present and attentive.

A return visit and an excellent meal with polite service. Lovely lemon sole and homemade tiramisu were a delight at Il bistro.

Il Bistro is a lovely restaurant in the lanes area of brighton. Very cosy and lovely atmosphere, great service. Fish was fresh but in one of our dishes, the fish was a little overcooked.

I was expecting more variety from an Italian seafood restaurant. The mixed sea food rice dish was not great, the lack of a bowl to clean my fingures was not ideal. The crepe with spinage and prawns seemed to lack prawns. The red wine by the glass was limited to the house red which was not the best. The steak which was ordered by customers on the tables around me did look good, I'd recommend that over the fish dishes. Serices and ambience was good.

New Years Eve early sitting, our waiter was attentive without rushing us. Food was good, in fact the fillet steak was quite possibly the best I have ever had in my life, it melted in my mouth. Many thanks.

i have to say what an enjoyable evening we had on friday, the staff were very pleasant and the food was excellent. we eat out a lot and this was comparable to any meals we hve had elsewhere why go to chain restaurants when you can go here prices were slightly higher but you get what you pay for i felt that it was worth every penny. it had a lovely calm atmosphere and there wasnt any rushing you from your table.superb..

Good location & service. Good food will return!

Came here about 5 years ago before moving to brighton and it was even better than remembered. I had whitebait to start and my boyfriend had a prawn/fish pancake - which were gorgeous! Both had steaks - great sauce, lovely chips, although not the best quality steak but then @£13.95 for 3 courses you wouldn't expect it to be. Both had profiteroles to finish which were amazing. Our welcome and service was warm and attentive. Best meal we've had out in ages! Will definitely be going back soon!

3 course set menu @ Il Bistro in Market Street, Brighton costs £13.95 per head + 10% service charge and was a nostalgic and satisfying experience. Our starters of spinach and prawn pancake in a rich mornay sauce were piping hot and tasty. Mains of chicken in a tarragon & mushroom sauce and lamb chops in a cherry sauce accompanied by fresh vegetables were equally good. Traditional profiteroles were our sweet and were light and fresh, just right. House white @ £15.95 a litre was full of flavour.
