About The Karczma

A hidden gem just five minutes walk from Birmingham’s landmark Bullring shopping centre, The Karczma restaurant takes its guests on a journey to Poland, embracing the tradition and culture of the country that brought us zurek, pierogi and Zywiec beer. Located within the Polish Millennium House, The Karczma has been transformed in to an old Polish country cottage, complete with hay-lined ceilings, dark wood frame and sheepskin covered seating, creating a cosy setting truly unlike any other in the city. True hospitality awaits guests to The Karczma, the staff keen to extend an authentic home-spun welcome to all, whether their guests are Polish ex-pats seeking a taste of Eastern Europe or born and bred Brits simply looking for something different from their dinner.

The Karczma is an unpreposessing building in an unprepropessing street in an unpreposessing part of town... the inside is wonderfully homely and full of rustic charm... and lots of sheepskin. The menu is not sophisticated but is wide-ranging with plenty of choices. The food is not finely flavoured but is hearty, authentic and cheap. Service was good and friendly too. A great choice for a different meal out.

First of all don't be put off by the location or appearance from the outside since once you are inside then you are transported to a rural inn complete with straw ceilings, sheepskins and wild boars. Staff are polish so if you know a bit of polish use it. We knew a little from having visiting Poland a decade or so ago and it helped, the waitress appreciated us trying order in Polish too. Starter of rye bread and soup was excellent, hock of pork was huge and fell off off the bone and lovely, although the cheesecake wasn't brilliant it was fine. If you are hungry and want a slab of authentic polish food then this is the place to go; make sure you wash this down with a couple of polish beer and finish off with a vodka for less than £25....

Such a hearty meal, great atmosphere, friendly staff. Can't recommend enough

A really unique dining experience the Karczma is Polish cuisine with a capital P! Charming proprietor is very proud of his national heritageand this shows in the food and hospitality. Beetroot soup and herring (washed down with vodka) were excellent as were the meat dumplings to follow. We had drooled over the deserts when we first arrived but were too full to try them by the time we had finished the main course. Try the homemade bread with pork fat and pickle when you arrive. Delicious!
