Lovely meal. Excellent steak. I went for the two course surprise menu and was delighted with the offerings - mackerel salad followed by mushroom, asparagus and cheese risotto. Delicious. Very reasonably priced with the added bonus of being a BYO. Will definitely return.
We had the Scallops and Haggis starters which were amazing, then we both had the rabbit with risotto, the rabbit was perfect but the risotto was a bit too salted for both of us. Then we had the banoffee parfait and the raspberry and white chocolate ice cream, they were both delicious. Amazing place and amazing value, definitely go back.
Myself and my wife visited the Cellar Door in central Edinburgh after I used Toptable to find a 'Steak' restaurant. We plumped for the chateaubriand, which was excellent, the restauarant is nice, wine was reasonable price and good quality, staff very friendly and food came quickly, all in all a good night.
The Celler Door Edinburgh was nice and really good value with the 3 courses for £9.95. The Hagis starter was good as was the salmon salad. The steak main was good as was the hake. The ice cream dessert was really good but the base of the apple tart dessert was too hard.
Loved it! Have already recommended to friends. Food was amazing. Staff extremely pleasant and chatty. Yep loved it and we will be back
Cellar Door, Edinburgh.. Come here and have one of the steaks, they are locally sourced and perfectly done. Starter was just the right amount and a great selection of them too. One way to (presumably) ensure you get cooking from the head chef is to go with the surprise menu, because the dishes are not directly from the main menu, you may even get sushi! Not as good a selection of desserts but still well made. It was busy, but as expected on a Saterday night with such good food (food:10/10)
Excellent food. Good service. Unfortunately a really busy night - restaurant was full and the noise level made it really difficult to have a conversation.
The Cellar Door in Edinburgh serves up amazing food and excellent service. Rabbit was one of the best I have ever tasted. Waiter was new but very enthusiastic and eager to impress. Would definitely come back again.
Celebratory meal at the Cellar Door in Edinburgh. Thoroughly enjoyable, very pleasant atmosphere and professional staff. Will be back.
Went to The Cellar Door Friday night Easter weekend with my family from back home (Sweden) and boyfriend. Very unexpected venue, but really nice and music great. Most importantly... All four of us LOVED the food. Dad + boyfriend had the roasted plum tomato soup to start with, and then all of us had the sirloin (which was cooked to perfection, for all of us) and then me + Dad's lady had the apple crumble and the homemade ice cream selection respectively for dessert. Everything just amazingly good

An enjoyable evening with delicious food, commendable service and warm ambiance. Went for the "surprise menu" - you'll be in safe hands if you go for any option, though!
Our first visit to the Cellar Door in Edinburgh. The entrance is very low key being through the shop and takeaway but the restaurant downstairs was a surprisewith tables on different levels. The lunch menu at the price is excellent even if the choice of dishes is limited. The food was nicely presented and cooked and the service was excellent. For a leisurely lunch I would strongly recommend it(and very close to the Museum of Scotland is a bonus)
Excellent food! Excellent service!
The Cellar door in Edinburgh deserves all the good reviews it has received on this website.
We had the best steak I have ever had and with %20 off it was a bargain!
The food was so nice we decided to go there the following day. We couldn't get the deal so we went for the secret menu and got a lovely dish of duck breast. Once again we didn't have room for pudding so ordered a few of their home made chocolate which was fab!
Was surprised as hadn't really heard about this place before. Service and food were excellent. Will definitely return.
Very nice food, excellent service especially for the money
Food good - service not so good.
Cellar Door Edinburgh Our third visit to this wonderful restaurant. It is a highlight of our trips to Edinburgh. The food is always well prepared and presented and the service of the serving staff is excellent, attentive but not overbearing. Well done once again Cellar Door. See you next visit.
The waitress at The Cellar Door could not have been nicer and our meal was excellent. I did as suggested by another top table review and ordered the chocolates and they were fabulous. The only problem with The Cellar Door is that it is not immediately obvious that it is a restaurant from the outside because the upstairs cafe is in darkness. Because of that, it was very quiet. They should look to having a more welcoming entrance off the street to help entice people in.
Extremely good value for money even without the top Table discount. Not the best food I've ever eaten but good (at any price) and outstanding for the price. Only complaint really was that the room was a bit cold!
First time at the Cellar Door, Edinburgh. We went pre theatre and were the only ones in which was a shame as it is a fabulous little restaurant. I have a gluten free diet and can be picky so opted for the carpaccio of beef then belly of pork both of which were fantastic! My pal had the chefs surprise and was very pleasantly surprised with dishes that she probably wouldn't order from a menu but tasted devine! Really enjoyable and will definitely return!
Great food, very tasty! Don't be put off by having to enter what looks like a closed shop - once downstairs this is a gem.
The food and service was excellent. Will certainly be back at some point. Nice and quiet with plenty space. Thanks to the staff at The Cellar Door Edinburgh for an enjoyable evening.
Dinner here was wonderful. Food was fantastic and service was great. We enjoyed our starters of haggis fritters and crab cake, and the steak main was very tasty. Portion sizes were perfect - very satisfying after a long day sightseeing!
The Cellar Door is a lovely restaurant. The food is fantastic and the service was second too none. If you are looking for a nice, quiet (early evening) place to enjoy good food and wine give this place a try.
Cellar Door, Edinburgh -Great food at an excellent price
Service was a bit slow but the food was worth the wait at the end!
Good food and service on a Friday night. Good value for the town centre, would go again
We dined at the Cellar Door, Edinburgh last night. Great wee restaurant, intimate atmosphere, friendly and attentive, but not intrusive staff. We both had steaks, which were delicious, mmm hand cut chips. If you have room left please try the Chocolates, the Chillie and Salted Caramel are awesome.
We really enjoyed our meal at The Cellar Door in Edinburgh. The food was delicious and exactly to our specification, and we didnt have to wait long for it to be cooked. Service was impeccable. I would definitely go again.
Enjoyed our meal at the Cellar Door. Lacked in atmosphere a little but our meal was booked for 7pm and it seemed more lively later. Very good quality steaks. Ice cream a little disappointing. Relaxed and friendly service. Enjoyable but not particularly memorable.
At the last minute, we had to cancel. Speaking to the restaurant, they were most friendly, helpful and understanding. I will certainly book this restaurant again as I've heard good reviews and the staff seemed very good.
Have been to this venue before and probably enjoyed it more. This time we went mid week, and the atmosphere was a bit quiet. We had the 'mystery menu' but it wasn't quite as exciting as other times we have been, althought the quality of food was still good and the service was excellent.
The Cellar Door, Edinburgh is good value for money especially with the Top Table 20% off food in February though offer was not applied to the total bill and we had to ask for it. Food was tasty, attractively presented and piping hot. The young gentleman who served us could not have been more attentive. Nothing was too much trouble. Get a table in the elevated part - much nicer place to sit. Only 2 female toilets, small and needing a refurb.
The Cellar Door, Edinburgh one of the best value lunches in town. Excellent choices, beautfully cooked and presented and helpful, friendly staff.
My wife and I went to The Cellar Door in Edinburgh. The entrance is as if to a cafe but downstairs there proved to be an excellent restaurant. I had a superb risotto followed by a steak beautifully cooked while my wife had first class fish. Good atmosphere and most of the clients appeared to be locals. Highly recommended
An evening spent at the Cellar Door in Edinburgh was top notch. Very unassuming entrace which makes you feel as though you have been let in on a secret. Great food, varied menu and informal atmosphere. I would definitley go back and recommend.
We had an excellent meal in The Cellar Door in Edinburgh. The food was excellent all round with everyone very please with their choices. We also tried the "Chef's Surprise" and all three courses were excellent. A very good wine list also at reasonable prices finished off a very good meal. We would definitely be back again when in Edinburgh.
The Cellar Door, Edinburgh
Great food and very welcoming staff.
Loved the concept of the chef's surprise menu which was great value.
This was our second visit to the Cellar Door in Edinburgh. A small, comfortable restaurant with friendly staff. Good affordable choice of menu, only negative being that the Chateaubriand would have been better if it had been sliced by someone who knew what they were doing, instead of leaving us to hack away at it ourselves. Otherwise, we had a most enjoyable evening and will certainly be back.
The Cellar Door was once again an excellent meal out.
Another lovely visit to the Cellar Door. I had the surprise menu and was served honey roast gammon with cassoulet, followed by a spiced plum and berry crumble. We will undoubtedly be back.
Cellar Door, Edinburgh was as good as ever in my view, but as my colleague had never been I'll use his review:
Numbers are his - I'd go a bit higher!
Very nice meal, pleasant unobtrusive service, a recommended restaurant. Be aware that there may be large parties present, so not always an intimate experience!
First visit to The Cellar Door, Edinburgh with a friend for lunch on Thursday 24 November. We both had the 2 course £6.95 workday lunch- excellent value with generous portions. When we opted for water, there was no pressure to have a bottle of wine. Our waitress could not have been nicer - attentive without fussing over us, very cheerful and smiling. Coffees exactly as we ordered as I always request a very hot coffee and do not always receive! Glad that I have already booked for dinner.
We had a lovely evening at the cellar door, food, wine and service all brilliant. We went for the chef's surprise menu all of which was lovely, very good value as well.
Lovely venue and food. We were there with a larger party so took advantage of the BYOB policy and ordered the surprise menu, which was really good value for money (Smoked Trout Salad, Gammon with Roasted Veg and Potato Rosti followed by Honey & Heather Pannacotta with Plum syrup). Only downside was when we asked to order coffee at 9:20pm and were told the kitchen was closed.
The Cellar Door did not dissapoint with an excellent value lunch. Mushroom soup was good and wholesome and the burger tasty -- they ran out of burger buns and was substituted with toasted bread. The service took longer than expected due to the kitchen being short staffed (it took us till 1400 after arriving at 1240) but we did not mind the wait -- could have been a different story with some tight deadlines!
Restaurant could have been warmer. Was sat at a table next to teh window which may have accounted for the temperature. Other than that, very nice place to eat.
