National Burger day (25 August) is today and why not pair your burgers and patties with an ice cold bottle of Chicago-brewed Goose Island beer. Turn up the heat with celebrity chef Valentine Warner’s tantalising food pairing recommendations to get the most out of your burgers and beers.
Goose Island Honkers Ale*
Inspired by visits to English country pubs, Honkers Ale combines a fruity hop aroma with a rich malt middle to create a perfectly balanced beer.
Honkers Burger: Rich venison or beef burger patty between soft bread fried in beef fat on one side of each slice. The honkers burger can also happily support a blue cheese dressing (Croppwell bishop) or a creamier but subtler cheese such as Waterloo. Horseradish or mustard would be a good variation on the blue cheese.
Goose Island IPA*
Award-winning Goose India Pale Ale (IPA) is a hop lover’s dream: a fruity aroma, set off by a dry malt middle and long hop finish.
IPA Burger: Chicken patty and brioche bun with a green sauce containing tarragon, marjoram parsley, capers, raw onion, dijon mustard, lemon juice and olive oil. Cream cheese together with the green sauce and patty is delicious, and juicy roast tomatoes sit very happily with the strong hemp herbaceous taste of the American hop.
Goose Island 312 Urban Wheat Ale*
Inspired by Chicago and named after the city’s dialing code. 312’s spicy aroma of Cascade hops is followed by a crisp, fruity ale flavour delivered in a smooth, creamy body that’s immensely refreshing.
312 Burger: A beef burger patty served with cheese, bacon, avocado and strong chipotle ketchup with crispy onions (slice and toss in our then deep fry until crisp. Dust with dried oregano and salt).
