Tuesday night in Charing Cross sees us upstairs in one of those pubs that quietly exist in the hinterland between the Strand and the Thames.

The reason? The launch of a curated whisk(e)y experience at new drink and diner destination, Double Barrel, upstairs at The Theodore Bullfrog in Charing Cross

Lot of bourbons and high-end whisk(e)ys on offer alongside barrel-aged, seasonal cocktails and seriously dark spirited bar bites, it’s an immersive pop-up in a prohibition era aesthetic.

Dark and atmospheric,  so dark I can’t see the menu without the help of Mr Phone, Double Barrel features cocktails devised and deployed by Chris Edwards and the team behind some of London’s best-known bars, including the Shrub & Shutter in Brixton and recently opened Alphabet Bar in Upper Street.

Working with a range of spirits, including Bulleit Bourbon, Johnnie Walker, Haig Club and Tanqueray, the knowledgeable bartenders are happy to walk us through the back bar of whisk(e)ys on offer.

A Barrel Aged BBQ Fashioned, infused with smoke, orange and jerky, is spot on. While a Folsom Prison Blues, with blueberry sherbet, bourbon and whites, is a bit girly to look at but packs a mean boy punch.

Another time I’d be happy to go through the bar’s signature whisk(e)y guide, which seems exhaustive and exhausting.

Food, when we could see it, was fine. A large choice of small plates and sides like slow-cooked pork shoulder tacos, Bulleit St Louis Ribs, Whisky Mac Cheese and some hot wings.

Double Barrel is open Wednesday to Saturday from 6pm to 11pm until Spring 2019 and is also available for private parties and celebrations of up to 75 seated and 100 standing.

Alongside this, Double Barrel will play host to a calendar of whisk(e)y tasting and cocktail making masterclasses.
