Michelin starred chef and restaurateur Jason Atherton’s City Social is launching a brand-new bar menu at Social 24, located in Tower 42 on floor 24 (of course). Foodepedia went to sample the views.
After airport style security and two different lift rides, you enter from stark lobby lighting into near pitch darkness.
Once your eyes adjust the interior is revealed; curvaceously inviting leather banquettes, tables with narrow spotlights, dark timber floors and every sumptuous, quality surface a dusky earth tone.
It all suggests an ancient gentlemen’s club, but in the place of wood panelled walls there are windows, massive ones, floor to ceiling glazing with stunning views across London. It’s quite a nightscape.
We are blinded by the choice of sophisticated cocktails from signature to classic and’social mixers’ gins, craft beers liqueurs, spirits or’social responsibility’ non-alcoholic concoctions.
Sipping around the obligatory massive single cube of ice in our cocktail choices, we lord it over London.
Jason and Executive Chef Tom Lidakevicius have designed a menu which features creative yet simple dishes, with British ingredients such as duck salad, smoked mackerel, fish pie or beef burger with pulled pork and Keen’s cheddar or dessert to finish.
Eating high up is often a Faustian deal, with average food offset by great views, especially at 30,000 ft (unless you are up the front with the metal cutlery), but here on the 24th floor, you can get both.
