New Covent Garden Market Place brings the spirit of the market back to Covent Garden. The recently opened 4000 sq foot food hall and café serves the finest restaurant quality food including sushi, authentic Thai curries and fresh salads made from only the best ingredients such as fresh Bocconcini mozzarella and luscious pomegranate seeds. There is something to suit everyone, including warming seasonal soups, sandwiches made using mouth-watering charcuterie and speciality cheeses on artisan baguettes, and a variety of delicious mezze dishes that can be eaten in or taken away. From early December 2009 there will also be award winning hot salt beef sandwiches and chicken soup by Harry Morgan.
In pursuit of exceptional quality a top sushi chef was hired to head up the team at the Covent Garden Market Place. With 7 years at Nobu, and another 3 years at Zuma rest assured the sushi is outstanding!
‘The idea behind Covent Garden Market Place is to have many different types of food that can be enjoyed in an informal setting. Ideal for the quick lunch or pre theatre snack, and also a great meeting place for morning coffee. The best thing is a group of friends can come in and each eat something different, yet share a communal table to enjoy their choice”, says Creative Consultant Ofer Zilkha.
Covent Garden Market Place sources produce from a selection of the best suppliers – including Machiavelli (Italian speciality meats delivered twice a week from Italy), Brindisa Spanish goods, Fresh Olive Company, Tracklement chutneys, preserves and condiments, Bay Tree Food Company pantry essentials, thinly sliced smoked salmon from Mike’s Smokehouse in Devon, crusty breads from London’s Artisan Bakery, authentic Greek specialities and cheeses from Odysea, fabulous French cheeses, as well as fresh fruit and vegetables carefully selected from the Nine Elms market. There are exclusive lines and unusual items you won’t find in other food halls such as Bossi & Turchi wild boar Tuscan ragu, Arabica Food and Spice Co’s pomegranate molasses and A l’Olivier fig vinegar.
The stunning interior space has exposed steel beams and pillars on the ground floor, uncovered brickwork on the huge vaulted lower ground floor, a vast outdoor terrace and benefits from entrances on both Shelton Street and Earlham Street. The result is the light, airy feel of a market place, the welcoming atmosphere of café, and the food quality of a top restaurant. This unusual and eclectic mix is sure to be a hit with local residents, office workers, shoppers, and tourists alike.
‘The name reflects the spirit and history of Covent Garden – we are a food Market Place, but under cover and rather more cozy!” explains Zilkha.
