Eat Momo opens in Borough Yards, serving a small menu of Nepali delicacies, centred around the steamed dumplings known as Momo.
Founded by sisters Trishna and Dipa Chamling, Eat Momo is a tribute to their childhood in Nepal and their passion for bringing the tradition and rituals of Momo-making to London. A small Momo factory in the heart of the city, offering a Nepali canteen specialising in handmade dumplings.
From mixing, kneading and rolling the dough to crafting the fillings and folding, Momo-making is about more than sustenance; it’s about fostering family and community connections and celebrating the joy of simple, communal dining.
Drawing inspiration from regional recipes found across Nepal, chicken, pork (an Eastern Nepali favourite), and beef Momo will be flavoured with coriander and spices, while vegetable Momo will be packed with ginger.
Designed for friends and family to feast on together, Momo is also served with tomato chutney and spicy chilli pickle for dipping — traditional accompaniments that every Nepalese family prepares differently.
A playlist of traditional Nepalese folk songs, curated by their father, Drip Chamling, will accompany the dining experience, which will feature plaited, crescent and half-moon Momo prepared in a special aluminium steamer from Nepal called a moktu and served up from the open kitchen.
The restaurant’s interior is a collaboration between architect Roberta Colombo and the Chamling sisters. Located at the entrance to Stone Cutters Lane beneath the historic railway arches, it embodies their values of minimalism and simplicity, providing a dynamic contrast to its vibrant location in Borough Yards.
The layout has been designed to follow the principles of Vastu Shastra, a traditional Hindu system of architecture that uses ancient beliefs to promote well-being, prosperity and positive energy.
Inside, guests are greeted by polished concrete floors, Formica tables and simple wooden stools, paying homage to Nepali Momo shops. Diners are invited to step into the canteen-style eatery and perch on a stool as they watch the chefs meticulously and lovingly handcraft each Momo.
Outside, a small riverside terrace offers additional seating, while a convenient kiosk hatch on Stonecutters Yard provides an ideal spot for grabbing Momo to go.
