Hanger & Cellar, located in the heart of Fulham, has introduced its own take on bottomless weekends – with a Saturday bottomless brunch and a bottomless Malbec Sunday roast.
These bottomless Sunday roasts are not for the faint hearted – go hungry.
Diners can choose from a selection of meats including the restaurant’s namesake, British hanger or bavette, Barnsley lamb chop or dry aged cote de boeuf. A sharing platter is served alongside this with beef fat roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings, market greens, heritage maple roast carrots, cauliflower gratin (also known as incredibly indulgent cauliflower cheese), ox jus and fresh horseradish.
The hanger steak and bavette were both fantastic – absolutely cooked to perfection for me which is pink in the middle but still with a nice charred, caramelised crust to the outside of the meat. Hangar goes very tough if cooked beyond rare, The steaks were soft, juicy and tender and when paired with the rich, velvety and smooth ox jus, a wonderful thing to eat.
Make sure if sharing you get a hearty portion of the cauliflower gratin – it is creamy and velvety and makes you want to dive in. The crust on the top has a satisfying chew and overall it is, well, very cheesy. Perfect for warming you on a cold day.
Market greens always make a nice accompaniment, and these were perfectly well done. The Yorkshire puddings were decidedly average – they could have been fluffier all around and crispier on the bottom. But, the thick caramelised onion puree that topped them was perfectly balanced between bitterness and sweetness.
The only disappointment were the roast potatoes. When they arrived, they looked so promising – golden and tempting. However, they were incredibly hard – even too much for me who lusts after a crispy potato skin – and outrageously salty. One bite was enough to put me off.
The Malbec that is served with the Sunday lunch is very quaffable. Nice and smooth with a bit of body that complements the steak well. If you’re going with a group of three or more, it is probably a nice way to enjoy some wine with your roast without worrying too much about cost.
I thoroughly enjoyed Hanger & Steak. The environment was clean, light, spacious and modern and the staff were friendly and welcoming. A great place to while away a few hours with good food and good wine.
