The Mayfair Chippy has docked in Knightsbridge and opened a brand new The Mayfair Chippy.

If you are familiar with its original Mayfair location you’ll know The Mayfair Chippy is small but mighty, with an almost permanent long queue of eager diners lined up outside. And not just on Fridays.

Accorfing to our waiter it’s a seven days a week occurrence. So, to welcome more customers, meet the Knightsbridge addition. It’s bigger, with outdoor heated seating, wider menu offerings, cloak room and a stunning glass ceiling. And they also serve breakfast, plus more cocktails from the gin bar.

Positioned on a split level it’s spacious, it’s fine and sophisticated, a long way from a regular fish and chip shop.

I spot the iconic train booth benches with mosaic tables, those tables have been living in my head rent free ever since I visited the Mayfair Chippy for Afternoon Sea this summer.

The booths come from vintage UK trains, they’re then upcycled with an addition of lacquer mosaic tiles. In the middle of the restaurant floor are round tables with curved chairs. I’m chair shopping currently and absolutely love how comfortable these are.

I even go so far as asking where the restaurant got the chairs from, sadly the producer only supplies businesses with large orders.

Putting the furniture shopping on pause for now, I like the menu here. As a person who prefers uncoated fish there is a choice for people like me. Controversial to visit a chippy I know but I’ve always preferred raw or grilled fish.

But I do like the batter on its own. Also, I brought a guest who is a fish and chips fan. He has eaten at least one third of the UK North Sea cod stocks, significantly contributing towards the MSC decision to ban UK from cod fishing in 2019.

The fish here is all sustainable and seasonal, so no need to worry about that. Guests next to us are indulging in Carlington oysters, while other seafood dishes mostly come from Cornish shores.

We seek help on starters as everything sounds good. The waiter’s recommendation is TMC signature prawn toast, exclusive to Knightsbridge. But I also want to try mussels and Cornish crab on sourdough.

I don’t think one can go wrong as all three are great. Starting with the TMC signature prawn toast, it’s a generously filled layer of chunky prawn pieces between two fluffy breads with panko crisp coating, neither of us imagined it would look or taste this good.

Served with sriracha dressing on the side, although I’d say it’s already so flavoursome that the sauce is optional. It’s your ultimate comfort food, greasy but to a balanced level with a stunning crispy coat.

The crab on toast is a more classical starter, with a decent topping of fresh crab meat on a silky smooth bed of avocado puree. The spiced tomato relish adds a tangy hint.

Mussels are also simple yet spot on, perfectly cooked to retain the right texture in a balanced creamy white wine sauce. When mussels are cooked wrong there is always plenty to moan about but when they aren’t, all there is left to do is just to enjoy them.

As the name suggests, a visit to this chippy wouldn’t be complete without diving into its signature offering beer- battered golden cod and chips.

Crisp coating that shatters revealing flakes of thick cod fillet, perfect harmony of crunch and succulent. To pair, also just as crucial here, are thick hand-cut chips, also golden and crispy on the edges. No words needed, my guest is very pleased with the main. While I struggle to take a picture as the plate is too big to fit the camera.

Like any classic fryer it offers all the needed sauces from gravy to curry and tartar. My grilled fillet of cod is a little dryer than I’d like but it goes well with the tartar sauce. It’s freshly made with chunky vegs and capers for an extra tangy twist, a lovely sauce.

So are the mushy peas and battered ‘wally’, I only have myself to blame here. I love battered pickles, great batter on all, I should have ordered scraps but there is no space really, we are already taking the leftovers home.

By the way the menu states the batter can be made alcohol free and gluten free, very considerate for the celiac diners.

The coleslaw also deserves a mention, a little sweet with a hint of vinegar, no mayo, tastes healthy and a tad bit acidic to balance the oil in the batter. I loved it so much I even attempted making it at home. And don’t miss trying their divine sticky toffee pudding.

The Mayfair Chippy is fine all around. Brilliant at satisfying your fish and chips craving, while also appealing to guests like me who don’t eat fried fish but can’t resist sneaking the batter. It’s a chippy with a twist, a wonderful mix of comfort and style, making it an unexpectedly delightful spot for a date too.
