Sunday lunch needn’t be sodden with gravy. At award-winning Babur, their tasty Indian Sunday buffet is a really spicy alternative

Don’t get me wrong, I love my Sunday roast, it’s as British as, well it’s as British as Sunday roast. Some Sundays though, I crave something different.

Babur is one of the finest high end Indian restaurants in the country. On a normal day you can expect elevated Indian dining with dishes that look wonderful and taste even better. Sundays though their game changes.

Sunday is a day for all the family and from 1- 4pm Babur has an all you can eat feast of home style Indian cooking for £29 a head, kids under seven eat free.

We went and found the place heaving with families with one toddler at a table happily eating a naan bread almost bigger than he was. Plenty of grans and grandpas too, all with piled plates from a large choice.

The menu changes weekly but classics like lamb rogan josh and chicken with spinach were on when we went along, with some seriously good mixed vegetable gram flour pakoras and quail wings.

Tilapia fish fritters and fish curry were excellent and the veggie options numerous. Pickled carrot with sesame seed, Indian honey mustard dressing for example, Roasted pumpkin with black onion dressing or slowly cooked black lentils in a creamy rich thick sauce

Of course there’s lashings of rice and plenty of naans if you brought your nan.

We thought we could do at least three trips to the buffet but overestimated our curry capacity. Two trips and we were in a blissful curry coma so deep I could barely finish my Cobra.

An excellent way to avoid the pub lunch. Babur’s buffet is  £23.95 for adults and £15.95 for children 7 – 12 years old – children under 7 eat for free.
