This September specialist sherry bar Sack has partnered with fino Tio Pepe to bring a taste of Southern Spain to the city with Tio Tuesdays.
Coinciding with the Jerez Sherry Festival in Spain which celebrates the wine harvest, every Tuesday throughout September the first 50 people through the doors of Sack after 5pm will receive a complimentary glass of Tio Pepe.
Set to Sack’s signature disco soundtrack, a Tio Pepe Venenciador will also be on hand for people to try their hand at using a ‘venencia’. A traditional skill in the sherry region which dates back centuries, a Venenciador takes samples of sherry from a barrel using a venencia before pouring into a glass from a great height for tasting.
Guiding people through the different types – from Fino through to Manzanilla, Amontillado, Oloroso and Palo Cortado – by the more familiar reference of flavour, helping everyone find their perfect sherry wine.
Tio Pepe is a Fino sherry, a variety which is celebrated for its dry, salty, nutty, aromatic flavour which makes it the perfect aperitif. Tio Pepe owes its dryness and almond, bready notes to a yeast named flor which is used during the ageing process.
Indigenous to Jerez, flor grows in a thin layer on the surface of the wine in the empty space left above the liquid in the barrels, protecting it from contact with the air as it ages. This leaves fino with its pale colour and freshness.
Loosely modelled on the wine and beer taverns of Southern Spain, Sack is by Thomas Aske and Tristan Stephenson of Fluid Movement and Barrie Wilson and Fabrice Limon of Scotch + Limon.
An informal, stripped back counter, low seating and tables made from old sherry barrels are paired with rustic orange tiling. Vintage pictures from the sherry region and disco decades adorn the walls.
Alongside a menu of carefully selected sherries is a range of Spanish wines, beers and sherry cocktails.
Tio Tuesdays will take place on Tues 5th, Tues 12th, Tues 19th and Tues 26th September
