With a sassy sparkler, a singing Sauvignon, a savoury Syrah and a stupendous Semillon, we’ve got all tastes covered on Mother’s Day.
Starting us off with a celebratory pop of the cork, Masi Moxxé (£15.95 Wine Direct) is a modern, dry and delicately floral fizz made from Pinot Grigio and Verduzzo grape varieties.
Italy’s Masi are famous for their technique of using partially air-dried grapes to bring added flavour and structure to the wines; and this is the first time that a fully fledged sparkler has been produced in this way.
It’s a pre-dinner glass that will please Prosecco lovers yet has its own character of ripe pears and a honeycomb softness.
We could have chosen any of the wines from Marisco Vineyards‘ reliable ‘The Ned’ range for Mother’s Day but it’s The Ned Sauvignon Blanc 2017 which comes out tops this year with its uplifting palate of gooseberry and grapefruit.
With typical New Zealand style, this refreshing wine is punchy and flavorsome, delivering its succulent fruit with a finish of clean, citric-lime acidity.
With perfect timing for Sunday, The Ned Sauvignon Blanc is on offer at £7 at Morrisons (until 20th March) reduced from the usual price of £9.
Full Bodied Syrah
Next up, a red wine from the New World with a bold personality.
Packed with flavour yet refined in style, Concha Y Toro’s Marques de Casa Concha Syrah 2015 (£13 Tesco) shows what Chile does best in combining quality and value.
Blackberry and plum flavours are enriched by black pepper and vanilla thanks to the wine’s maturation in French oak barrels for sixteen months.
It’s a big wine but smooth and elegant too; magnificent for serving with that special Sunday roast that you’ll doubtlessly be impressing Mum with.
Sweet Nobility
To round off our Mother’s Day selection, a sensational dessert wine from Australia.
De Bortoli’s Noble One 2013 37.5cl (£16.99 Ocado) is a deeply coloured Semillon of unparalleled sweetness and intensity.
Made in the time -honoured tradition of the world’s great sweet wines, Noble One is (at 10.5%) relatively low in alcohol yet sky high on the flavour scale.
Expect an explosion of concentrated, preserved fruits, a deep maturity and a lively finish that delivers freshness and impact.
The only thing which could possibly follow that is a beautifully worded Mother’s day card; but we’ll leave that to you.
