German food is not all about meat and potatoes despite what you may think. Discover veggie at the Grand Café  at German Gymnasium, in the heart of London’s King’s Cross.

There’s a host of vegan and vegetarian dishes to choose from, all with a German accent .

Breakfast is Heidelberg (VG), a spinach, quinoa, tomato, feta and avocado-fuelled start to the day, with hot sauce, on dark rye.  If you prefer sweet things to start the day try Quarkkeulchen (V) – rich creamy cheese with cinnamon donuts, bound by a sticky blueberry compote. The Waffles (V) come with bananas and a rich chocolate sauce.

Lunch and dinner offers a zingy Zucchini Schnitzel’ (VG), with courgette schnitzel, cauliflower puree and tomato concasse, or there’s Vegane Currywurst (VG),  a vegan sausage loaded with curried tomato sauce, crispy French fries and finished with a piquant spring onion and chilli kick.  Then there’s Schupfnudeln (V), hand rolled potato noodles with apples, wild mushrooms, and kale in a truffle cream sauce. For the cheese lovers, Käsespätzle (V), features cheesy noodles, with crispy onions balanced by a light, fresh side salad.

The desserts include a Hazelnut Chocolate Mouse (VG), starring a strawberry bonbon with a chocolate crumble topping and Vanilla Rice Pudding (VG), – creamy rice, Madagascan vanilla, and crunchy cinnamon crumble, with a tart cherry compote.

Go nuts for the Hazelnut Praline (V), a combination of caramelised hazelnuts, hazelnut chocolate mousse, toffee sauce, and chantilly cream or the Almond & Plum Tart (V),  a marriage of plums and fragrant frangipane.
